Submitting texts containing avoidable errors to a teacher indicates a lack of learning or care, and should be scored lower than texts without avoidable errors. Obviously, you should check the sentence for common errors. For beginners and intermediate learners, however, your needs are different. How To Write A Critical Essay

How To Write A Critical Essay These definitions may not always be necessary and you should use your own discretion based on the subject material. This is the first paragraph of the introduction. Click through the slides below to learn about the key characteristics of academic writing. The reference list is at the end of your essay and is a list of all the sources you used in-text to support your argument. Finally, make sure you read carefully any feedback you are given on your essays. Your tutors will be keen to help you learn and progress. If there is a word count for your essay try to devote 10% of this to your introduction. When you are writing an evaluation paragraph use the PEC system. It is more appropriate to use original content to demonstrate your understanding. Each paragraph should have a purpose / theme, and make a number of points - which need to be support by high quality evidence. Be clear why each point is is relevant to the argument. Remember to follow the formula to structure your introduction. The real value of writing introductions based on a simple structural formula is that you’re more likely to feel more confident about what you’re writing. As you develop your writing skills you can modify your style to suit your needs. By reading, we mean published, peer-reviewed literature; Wikipedia does not count! Other websites should not be cited in essays, but you can use them to further your understanding and get lists of peer-reviewed literature to read. You also need to check spelling, sentence structure and punctuation. Correct all of these on your first draft unless you are making drastic changes which require a significant amount of rewriting. If you choose to use a printed copy of your writing, you might find it useful to use a different pen so that the corrections and alterations are clearly visible. Check sentence structure, spelling and punctuation as you revise. That means that the best essays are about surprise, “You probably think it’s one way, but in reality, you should think of it this other way.” See tip #3 for more on this. It would be useful at the beginning of each paragraph if you explicitly outlined the theme being discussed (.e.g. cognitive development, social development etc.). It is best to structure your essay according to key themes. You can read my ten best tips for having fun while writing an essay that earns you the top grade, or checkout this presentation designed by our friends at Canva Presentations. Yes, you need to follow the guidelines in your assignment. All sources referenced accurately and in line with APA guidelines. At undergraduate level, more so than at A-Level, you will need to demonstrate evidence of further reading. Lectures are supposed to be a pointer and guide for your further reading. Essays usually have an introduction, body paragraphs, a conclusion and a reference list. Ideally the conclusion should summarize the key themes / arguments of your essay. State the take home message â€" don’t sit on the fence, instead weigh up the evidence presented in the essay and make a decision which side of the argument has more support. Themes are illustrated and developed through a number of points . Choose relevant points only, ones that most reveal the theme or help to make a convincing and interesting argument. In the main body of the essay every paragraph should demonstrate both knowledge and critical evaluation. Quality of Written Communication - writing clearly and succinctly with appropriate use of paragraphs, spelling and grammar.

Calculation of 10-Day Portfolio VaR Historical Simulation - 1925 Words

Calculation of 10-Day Portfolio VaR: Advantages and Disadvantages of Historical Simulation (Essay Sample) Content: Calculation of 10-day portfolio VaRValue at Risk is a measure of financial risk that is widely used. It gives a method of determining the quantity of risk of a portfolio and managing the risk (Marrison, 2002). In calculating the 10-day VaR, three ASX-listed companies were selected. The companies were Azure Healthcare Ltd (AZV.AX), Azonto Petroleum Ltd (APY.AX), and National Australia Bank Limited (NAB.AX). The respective returns for the respective companies (in AUD) were obtained for the period between. The calculations were done using two different methods, the historical simulation and the Variance Covariance parameter approach (VCV approach).Justification for chosen calculation methodsHistorical simulationHistorical simulation was chosen because it offers an implementation of the full valuation in a straightforward manner. Market states are simulated and produced through the addition of the period-to-period changes in market variables in a specific time series to t he base case. The historical simulation assumes primarily that there is a full representation of the set of possible future scenarios by the events of a particular historical window. In this method, a set of changes in the risk factor are collected over a given historical window. The scenarios obtained are then assumed to represent all the possibilities that might happen in the immediate future (Alexander, 2008).Advantages and disadvantages of historical simulationA major advantage of historical simulation is that no assumptions are made about the changes in risk factor being from a specific distribution. As a result, this methodology is consistent with changes in risk factor originating from any distribution. Historical simulation also does not involve any estimation of the statistical parameters like variances or covariance. It is also continuously exempt from the unavoidable estimation errors. It is easy to explain and defend even to an audience that is not technical yet importan t, like the corporate board of directors. No assumptions are needed on the distributions of the risk factors, there is ease revaluating the full portfolio based on the scenery data, and it is intuitively simplistic and obvious (Hull, 2008).Historical simulation also has certain disadvantages. Accomplishing the purest form of historical simulation is difficult since the method poses the requirement of data about risk factors spanning over a long historical period. This requirement is usually necessary so that what might happen in the future can be adequately represented. The method also does not involve distributional assumptions. The scenarios used in calculating VaR are restricted to the ones that took place in the historical sample (Bohdalova, 2007). The past is not always a good way of modeling for the future. There is also a high possibility of gaining results that are erroneous if the sample size is not sufficient (Boyarshinov, 2016).Variance-covariance methodThe variance cova riance (VCV) method makes use of a historical sample of the risk factors of a portfolio value. It functions almost like the historical simulation. However, unlike the historical simulation, the variance covariance method assumes that there are normally distributed logarithmic yields for the risk factors. The estimate of the VaR is then equated to a sample quartile of the portfolio yield volatility. The volatility of the portfolio yield is calculated depending on the covariance between portfolio risk factor yields.Advantages and disadvantages of Variance-covariance methodThere are many advantages of variance covariance method. They are easy to implement as compared to the historical simulation method and the Monte Carlo Simulation. The method requires less historical data in comparison to the historical simulation method. In most cases, it has an acceptable precision and accuracy. The method also has its disadvantages. VCV method has a low quality of estimates for securities whose pri ces have nonlinear dependence on the risk factors. The assumption of the logarithmic distribution of the yields of the risk factors is not always correct. It also ignores the risk of extreme events that can cause significant losses in the value of the portfolio (Boyarshinov, 2016).The Monte Carlo Simulation method was not chosen because of its high dependence on the resource which makes it very time-consuming. The sample sizes of observations that are used in deriving the distribution kind and parameters are also often insufficient. The insufficiency can lead to incorrect estimates of VaR.Calculation of VaR using Variance-covariance methodIn this method, the simple moving average (SMA) method was used. The calculations involved include the SMA daily volatility, SMA daily VaR, and Portfolio holding SMA VaR.The portfolio comprises equal exposures of 1000 shares for all the stocks. The market price for AZV.AX, APY.AX and NAB.AX were AUD 0.068, 0.015 and 28.94 respectively. The histori cal price data for all the three companies were obtained for the period of 14th July 2015 to 13th May 2016. The daily time series are presented in the extract in Figure 1.this period is called the look-back period, which is the period over which the risk is evaluated.Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 1: Time series data for AZV, APY and NABIt is first important to determine the return series. To obtain this, the natural logarithms of the ratio of successive prices are determined. This is shown in Figure 2.The formula shown in the figure is LN(Cell B19/Cell B18). In cell B19 there is 0.15 while in cell B18 there is 0.15. calculating the LN(0.15/0.15) gives 0 as shown in cell H19.Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 2: Return SeriesThe next step is to calculate the daily volatility is calculated using the formula:Rt = rate of return at time, t.E(R) = mean of return distributionThe squared differences of Rt are summed over E(R) across all data points then the results are divided by the number of re turns in the series minus one so that the variance can be obtained (Alexander, 2008).After this, the square rood to the result is calculated, which is the standard deviation (SMA volatility) of the return series. The method used in this calculation, however is the use of the STDEV function in EXCEL, which is applied to the return series as illustrated in Figure 3. The daily volatility is determined as 0.494429 for the portfolio.Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 3: Calculating the daily volatilityGetting the SMA VaR is determining how much will be lost over a particular holding period with a particular probability. The daily volatility is multiplied by the z-value of the inverse of the standard normol cumulative distribution function (CDF) which corresponds with a specific confidence level, which is the NORMSINV (confidence level). For example, in our case, the confidence level is 99%, so it is expressed in excel as NORMSINV (99%). Figure 4 shows how the daily VaR is calculatedFigure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 4: Daily VolatilityFigure 4 show that the daily VaR is 1.150214. The VaR is the Daily VaR multiplied by the square root of the holding period in days. The square root function in excel is SQRT. Figure 5 shows how the calculation is done in excel.Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 5: VaRCalculating VaR using the Historical Simulation methodIn this method, there is no assumption that is made about the return distribution that is underlying. The first step is to obtain the return series and reorder them into ascending order from the smallest to the largest returns. This is done by use of the Sort function in excel. After reordering the values, the number of returns in the series is counted using the COUNTA formula as shown in Figure 6 (Bohdalova, 2007).Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 6: Determining the number of returnsFrom our series, there are 218 returns. The daily VaR is then calculated as the return that is corresponding to the index number. It is calculated by subtractin g the confidence level then multiplying it with the number of returns at the point where the result is rounded down to the nearest integer. The integer is the index number for a particular return. This is shown in Figure 7.Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 7: Historical SimulationThe 10-day VaR is then calculated by multiplying the daily VaR by the square root of the holding period- 10 days. Figure 8 shows how this is done.Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 8: 10-day VaR.From our calculations, the 10-day VaR for AZV.AX, APY.AX and NAB.AX are 0.705641867, 0.909730591 and 0.150688793 respectively. The respective amounts of worst case loss are AUD 47.98364698, 13.64595886 and 4360.933676.In order to calculate the portfolio VaR through the historical simulation, the returns are combined to get the portfolio change as shown in Figure 9.Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 9: Calculating portfolio changeThe obtained values are then sorted in an ascending order from the least to the largest value. The number of observation is equivalent to the index, which is manually assigned. After this, the VaR is calculated for each portfolio change as shown in Figure 10.Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 10: Calculating VaR historicCell D10 contains the sum of all portfolio values, it is shown in Figure 11.Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 11: Sum of portfolio valuesTo get the VaR that corresponds to our rounded down Number of Observation (Index), the IF function is used in column R as shown in Figure 12.Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 12: Obtaining the VaRAll possible values of VaR obtained by the IF function are then summed up to get the overall VaR. This step is not very necessary since only one value is obtained by the IF function. However, it is required to set the result at an obvious position. It is shown in figure 13.Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 13: VaRNo...

Relativism Michigan Ross Publication †Free Samples to Students

Question: Discuss about the Relativism Michigan Ross Publication. Answer: Introduction: Most of the times businesses find themselves in a dilemma on deciding what is morally right. According to Shaw, et al. (2013, p. 26) there are many analytical and reasoning skills that business can apply to resolve these issues once they occur. To avoid the occurrence of unethical business related issues, the managers should ensure there are always the concepts of honesty and integrity and fair practices in place. However, this is not the case for the FIFA scandal that has largely affected its stakeholders. The corruption scandal at FIFA evidently eroded the dignity of the federation, and inconsequently affected the operations and affairs with the outside business and corporate environment. While it is debatable about the extent of the moral rot and the parties involved with pending investigations, the most affected stakeholders are the sponsors. Despite wild allegations that speculated that viewership of the premier football matches was at stake, many experts including Professor David Mayer at Michigan Ross are objected to the postulation. He says, My guess is it will not impact viewership, and if there is money to be made will not have a big impact on businesses who support the World Cup, which resoundingly assures the federations sponsorship, since it is the backbone of the trade (Michigan Ross 2015 p. 32). As this paper digs deeper into the controversies to highlight the degree of breach of regulations and associated impact to the affected stakeholders, the plain truth reveals itself. With multibillion sponsor partners such as Coca-Cola and Adidas having expressed their dire concerns with the malice at the heart of FIFA, the federation must be nuts to put its house in order before misery catches up. On the other hand, McDonald's is unsettled about the same, because Americans are zero tolerant to subverted ethics and anti-corruption (Wilson 2015, p. 49-51). In addition to the three above, Sonny, Hyundai, Adidas among others have as well threatened to loosen ties with the ill-fated federation, should justice and transparency be denied (Karr 2016, p. 23). Not to forget, the top officials of the governing council have as well be affected, given that Swiss authorities arrested six FIFA executives in the annual meeting in Zurich, who will later be charged with misappropriation of funds (McFarland 2015, p. 33). Since the allegations and consequent pursue of impunity, FIFA has realized that it owes its shareholders a great deal of responsibility. Thierry Weil, the Director of Marketing, expressed his regrets over breached rights to the partners and reaffirmed allegiance to the law for sustained activities of the federation, as well as its responsibility to the millions of fans around the world (Petriglieri 2015, p. 121). Lastly, some member states of the federation are as well guilty of the dishonesty that almost paralyzed its operations and reputation. Notably, Russia was hinted to have participated in the vice that saw funds exchange hands in return for a favor. For instance, Putin must have played a part to have the 2018 edition hosted in Moscow, for both prestige and economic reasons (Bremmer 2015). Ultimately, the leadership crisis that was just unveiled under Sepp Blatters tenure has mostly affected stakeholders, members and randy executives who might be locked behind bars when found g uilty. Orange Slices free essay sample

Orange Slices In class on Friday, I found myself with a very unfamiliar taste in my mouth. While I didn’t know it at the time because I had never tried one before, it was a jelly-like candy coated with sugar, called an Orange Slice. It reminded me of something I would have loved to eat when I was a little kid. I was surprised to discover that these little orange candies have been around for decades and have a large fan base. Dan, an Orange Slice fan from Oregon says, â€Å"Even today when my grandchildren visit we love sitting around putting Orange Slices in our mouths and beaming at each other with bright orange smiles† (Old Time Candy). Another Orange Slice admirer, Tamara, from Florida says, â€Å"I didnt think something so small as candy could bring so much joy† (Old Time Candy). I am now proud to say that I have jumped on the bandwagon of Orange Slice enthusiasts, and would like to share my very first experience with this delectable candy. We will write a custom essay sample on Orange Slices or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The first thing to hit my tongue was the gritty outside layer of the food. The texture of the first layer felt like I left my mouth open on the beach as the salty breeze floated by and airborne particles of grimy sand planted themselves there. The taste of the outer layer was so sweet and sugary it was almost sour enough to make me pucker my lips. As I bit down, my teeth sunk slowly through the thick candy as a warm juicy burst of flavor erupted to fill every corner of my mouth, like a long tumbling wave releasing its energy as it finally comes crashing down on the unsuspecting shore. I could taste the sun in the balmy orange flavor of the candy. It was as if I was at a seaside carnival, and the ripest, juiciest oranges in the world replaced the colorful balls I landed in after coming off the slide. The texture was as heavy and thick as the humid evening air on the coast, but it was also smooth and wet as the tops of the jellyfish that make a quick and subtle appearance on the crest of each wave, and then fade suddenly back into the vast shadows of the sea, never again to be seen by the same set of eyes. The candy stuck itself in the most awkward spaces in my mouth, my tongue unable to rescue it, like the sand that buries itself in the most inappropriate spaces of my bikini, after a nice swim in the warm ocean water. Neither the candy suck in my mouth or the sand stuck in my bikini can be removed politely in public. As the final bites of the candy are chewed and swallowed, it’s as if I am packing my belongs to depart the bliss of paradise and return to the drabness of every day live. The after taste is bitter sweet like the road trip home. Nostalgia sets in as I think about the amazing experience my mouth just had, like the days after a vacation when I look through the pictures and am distressed to realize I can’t easily revisit the feelings and tastes of ecstasy provided by a vacation just the same as the Orange Slice candy. Extraterrestrial Life essays

Extraterrestrial Life essays As biologists learn about life on Earth in all its diversity, and at the rate that new planets are being discovered the search for life elsewhere grows more steadily pressing. We have discovered organisms on the Earth that seem tenacious and tough almost to a fault; they thrive in the most seemingly adverse conditions imaginable, and organisms so fragile and specialized so as to exist in only the most isolated and pristine environments. With the knowledge of this great amount of diversity it is a safe bet that we will one day find organisms in other parts of the galaxy that are not indigenous to the earth. This richness of diverse life though is comprised of creatures that could only survive on the Earth, so in order to draw any strong conclusions life must be found elsewhere. Due to their relative proximity the planets of our own solar system are the best place to start this search. And finally what types of organisms could we expect to find on other planets judging from the sam ples on earth? Even with the great diversity of life on earth and new species being discovered almost daily it is unlikely that any terrestrial creatures could survive in the environments of the other planets we have discovered thus far. There is compelling evidence of flowing water on mars and that the moons of Jupiter could contain even vast frozen oceans but these are still unknowns. The other planets we have discovered outside of our solar system all appear to be gas giants similar to the gas giants of our own solar system and these planets and these planets seem like the least likely place to harbor any organisms that we know of. But we must work with the knowledge that we already have and apply the template of life to the rest of the universe since what we have learned of life on earth is all that we know however unlikely it may seem that any of the terrestrial organisms could survive off the earth. We must find organi ...

Legislation and ethics report - Essay Example There’s even the freckled duck enclosure which is one of the world’s rarest ducks. Given the educational and social experience that the student will experience they will have closer understanding and appreciation of what they have always learnt in class because they will have real life experience of practically interacting with what they have always learnt in class. The focus of excursions is to give learning as well as social experience to the students through interactions with nature and other practical aspects that make the students comprehend more at the work place. Walking along the trails is very educational for the children as they get to explore and learn things that they might just see in books. E.g. live birds and reptiles. Watching animals and birds will make the children comprehend things that they have always seen in books. Through such experience, the students will have better understanding of the aspects through real life experience. On the same note, social welfare of the children would be enhanced through the interactions that the opportunity would accord them as they interact amongst themselves as well as with the adults that accompany them. The ratios between children and adult will be 3: 1. There will be 5 adults coming along; 3 teachers and 2 volunteers. It is always better to have more adults and be able to care for all the children than to have more children and fewer adults. We will be hiring a bus. Children will board the bus from the centre and arrive straight to Hunter Wetlands. They will not be crossing a pedestrian or a set of traffic lights. In course of the journey, there will management that will ensure that the seating capacity stated in the compliance plate is not exceeded. On the same note, the adults who accompany the children will ensure that the children will remain seated all through the journey and that they will be seated near an adult persons

Compare and contrast the ways in which two plays investigate the Essay

Compare and contrast the ways in which two plays investigate the question of gender - Essay Example Both the plays explore the depths of lust, power and money through the struggles of the characters, who are in a quest after it. In this article, we discuss by comparing and contrasting the various themes, characterization and ideology of the two plays, particularly investigating the question of gender. Women Beware Women: The play Women Beware Women was originally written by Thomas Middleton in 1657 and later on, in 1879, Howard Barker, one of the prolific playwrights of that period, revamped it to the modern world audience. The play was primitively observed as a Jacobean tragedy, until when Barker replaced the Jacobean Puritanism with the ‘modern’ adaptation, putting forward his views on the redemption power of sex. According to the Barker’s version of the play, Women Beware Women tells the story of Bianca, a rich daughter, who elopes with her love, Leantio and lives secretly in his mother’s place. Despite her husband’s exhortation, the Duke of Flo rence determines to lure her with the help of Livia, a wealthy widow in the neighborhood. Bianca is seduced by Duke and turns to be his mistress leaving her husband. Parallel to it goes the story of Isabella, who engages in an affair with her uncle, Hippolito, with the help of his sister Livia, and later is forced for a marriage with a rich foolish Ward. On the night before the wedding of Bianca, she is raped by Sordido, as a punishment for her acquisitive complicity for the Duke’s seduction. However, the Ward is not ever a fool and has pretended to be so for hiding his despair for Isabella. By the end, Livia is reformed as a liberated woman with a highly igniting passion towards Leantio. Cloud Nine The two-act play Cloud Nine is written by Caryl Churchill in 1979 with the workshops of Joint Stock Theatre Company. In the first Act, the characters are set in the backdrop of Victorian era, when the British colonialism was in full swing. However, in the second Act, the setting i s changed to a reformed culture in London during 1979, when the Victorian ideology of restrictions are loosened yet several other forms of repression exist in the society. In Act I, Clive, the British colonial administrator, lives with his wife Betty, son Edward and daughter Victoria. Meanwhile, Harry Bagley, an explorer and Mrs. Saunders, a widow arrives seeking protection from the natives. Matters start changing dramatically in the family when Clive ogles with Mrs. Saunders, while Betty fancies Harry, whereas Harry gets intimate with the servant Joshua. The governess Ellen reveals her lesbian nature which is confronted by Clive, forcing her into a marriage with Harry, even after his gay sexuality is disclosed. The play forwards with the marriage celebration, where Mrs. Saunders is kicked out by Clive for her disgusting behavior with Betty for kissing Clive. The Act ends with Joshua pointing a gun at him when he starts to initiate a speech for the couple. Act II happens a few decad es later in a setting in London and the characters are grown up. Betty, after leaving Clive, lives with her daughter Victoria, who is now married to Martin, an authoritarian husband. Edward, in the new scenario, is openly gay, leading a relationship with Gerry, whereas, Victoria begins a lesbian relationship with Lin. However, Edward discovers that he is bisexual and moves in with Lin and Victoria. Finally, Victoria leaves Martin and goes for living together with Lin and

Contributing factors to student achievement Essay Example for Free

Contributing factors to student achievement Essay In 2001, the No Child Left Behind Act placed even stronger responsibility on states to raise student performance. As a result of these accountability standards, states must now administer standardized tests to â€Å"measure adequate yearly progress† of all students (2001). They face costly federal mandates and must submit comprehensive plans. The federal law also focuses on narrowing the achievement gap between races. It requires that states monitor the performance of racial and economic subgroups and undertake corrective action in failing schools (Wong, 2004). †¦states are implementing policies that provide incentives to attract and retain teachers and increase student performance. Incentives are helping states recruit new teachers into the work force, attract persons from outside education, retain teachers in the classroom and support accountability programs that focus on school-by-school efforts to boost student achievement (Cornett and Gaines, 2002). Researchers examining student performance consistently find that one of the most important influences on student achievement is socioeconomic status (SES) of students. These findings give little comfort to educators in economically disadvantaged schools who are facing heavy pressure to improve performance and close the gap between minority and white students. Yet Verstegen and King (1998) claim that a growing body of research is using better databases and more sophisticated methodological strategies to provide evidence that school policies can make a positive difference in student outcomes. They also emphasize that resource patterns that optimize performance in one setting do not necessary work in others. Encouraged by this line of thinking, the researcher will investigate factors that may explain the differences in performances in schools that share a common socioeconomic context. Are there choices made by policymakers and administrators in economically disadvantaged schools that spark significant improvements in performance in these schools? In this study, the researcher will assume the significance of SES or â€Å"input† factors in explaining achievement, and the researcher considers the impact of other factors over which schools have some control. Impact of Process Variables Although the statistical models will include measures for SES (percent of economically disadvantaged students and percent white students), the focus will be on process variables. The latter include those variables that school systems more or less control. The researcher categorizes these variables into three general areas: 1) school class size 2) school policies and 3) proven effective programs to increase student reading proficiency. One of the most controversial characteristics of schools is the amount of students per teacher (FTE). Production function research on the effects of school size has been inconclusive, and both sides have their advocates. Supporters of small schools contend that students get more attention, school governance is simpler, and teachers and administrators are more accessible to parents. Noguera (2002) states that in high schools where the majority of low-income students of color are achieving at high levels the one common characteristic is the small size of the schools. Lee and Burkam found that students are less likely to drop out of schools with fewer than 1,500 students (2003). However, others argue that large schools are able to offer students a wider range of educational offerings and services (â€Å"Still Stumped,† 2002). Recent research indicates that the effects of school size may depend on the SES of students. Findings show consistently that the relationship between achievement and socioeconomic status was substantially weaker in smaller schools than larger schools, that is, students from impoverished communities are much more likely to benefit from smaller schools. On the other hand, a positive relationship exists between larger schools and the output measures of affluent students (Lee and Smith, 1996; Howley and Bickel, 1999). Because this study will examine the performance of economically disadvantaged students, the researcher expects to find a negative relationship between school size and achievement scores. That is, the larger the school, the less likely students are to achieve on standardized tests. The relationship between class size and positive student achievement is another relationship that has been closely studied. In 2000, Congress allocated $1. 3 billion for class size reduction as a provision of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) (Johnson, 2002). Most of the studies that examine the effect of class size on student performance have focused on primary schools. One of the largest and most scientifically rigorous experiments was the 1985, Tennessee’s Student Achievement Ratio (STAR) study. The STAR project provides compelling evidence that smaller classes can improve student achievement, especially in primary schools, which could have lasting effects (1985). The four year longitudinal study focused on classes in Tennessee and consisted of grades kindergarten through third. Classes of thirteen to seventeen students were compared to classes of twenty-two to twenty-six students; of the total classes, some had just one teacher and some had a teacher and aid. Phase one included over three hundred classes and a total of 6500 students (1985). The result after four years was positive support for the reduction of classroom sizes which proved to have positive effects on student achievement. Some critics have pointed out the limitations of project STAR (Vinson, 2002). A couple of limitations listed in a report by Tony Vinson in 2002 were: 1) limiting sample of certain cultural groups 2) schools volunteered to participate in the study, suggesting they had motivation to use innovative teaching practices. In 1996, Mostellar, a statistician, reported; â€Å"the Tennessee Class Size study demonstrates convincingly that student achievement is better in small K-3 classes and the effect continues later in regular-sized classes (1996). In a follow-up study, Nye, Hedges and Kontantopoulos (1999) found that students of smaller class size continued showing significant advantages over students of regular-sized classes, throughout school, to graduation. These students demonstrated higher grades, took more challenging classes, had better graduation rates and were more likely to go on to college (Vinson, 2002). Wisconsin’s Student Achievement Guarantee in Education (Vinson, 2002), began in the 1996-1997 school year and was expanded in 1998-1999 and again in 2000-2001 (Wisconsin Dept. of Public Instruction). The objective of the program is to improve student achievement through the implementation of four school improvement strategies: class sizes no more than 15:1 in grades K-3; increased collaboration between schools and their communities; implementation of a rigorous curriculum focusing on academic achievement; and improving professional development and staff evaluation practices. Schools in SAGE have renewable 5-year contracts with the state and get state aid equal to $2,000 for each low-income child in the grades served by the program. During 2005-06 495 schools participated in SAGE (up from 30 when the program began). Just over 93,000 K-3 pupils were served. State funding, which was $4. 5 M in 96-97 will be $98. 6 M in 2006-07. A few districts are also benefiting from a state categorical aid program created in 1999 to help schools pay debt service on the cost of new classrooms built to accommodate SAGE (DPI).
